FIELD: process engineering.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to process and hardware for etherification and condensation used in production of ethers form fused phase. Proposed etherification method comprises heating initial reaction medium flowing upward in heat exchanger to get heated reaction medium and releasing vapors from therefrom into horizontally elongated separation vessel to produce mainly liquid product. At least, portion of vapors, a bypass reaction product, is withdrawn in heat exchanger and/or in separation vessel. Separation vessel feature length-to-diameter ratio (L:D) equal to 1.25:1 - 8:1 and is directly connected with heat exchanger. Proposed reactor comprises vertical heat exchanger and horizontal separation vessel. Heat exchanger has inlet and outlet. Separation vessel has fed material inlet and vapor and liquid outlets. Note here that said fed material inlet is communicated with aforesaid heat exchanger outlet. Separation vessel feature length-to-diameter ratio (L:D) equal to 1.25:1 - 8:1 and is directly connected with heat exchanger. Liquid outlet is separated from fed material inlet at, at least, 1.25D in horizontal direction. Note here that liquid outlet is separated from fed material inlet by less than 2D in vertical direction.
