SUBSTANCE: invention relates to biotechnology and specifically to aquatic toxicology and toxicogenetics. Disclosed is a method of estimating genotoxic activity of aquatic media. A synchronised culture of daphnia is obtained from the most fertile clone from a population of daphnia, except a laboratory population. Same-age, parthenogenetic daphnia from the synchronised culture are exposed simultaneously in the analysed solution (test), in the water (K-control) in a solution of a reference toxicant (KT+) and in the solution of a reference mutagen (KM+). The physiological state of the special initial generation (F0) is recorded. Toxicity coefficients are determined, specifically the death rate (L0) and the fertility rate (P0). The physiological state of second generation daphnia (F2) is recorded. Total mutagenic activity is calculated using the formula: &=ft/fc, where ft is the frequency of occurrence of lethal and sub-lethal mutations in the test, and fc is the frequency of occurrence of lethal and sub-lethal mutations in the control. The total mutagenic value is compared with isoeffective concentrations of reference mutagens and toxicants. The limiting hazard factor is selected and the level of genotoxic activity is established based on the obtained results.

EFFECT: invention increases the accuracy of estimating toxic and genetic effects caused by agents under investigation.
