FIELD: ecology; genetic toxicology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for monitoring the environment and assessing the environmental risk of increased mortality in the area of hydrosphere pollution. A method for predicting the degree of risk of developing oncological diseases in the population using water from open reservoirs and streams for domestic and drinking water supply includes sampling bottom sediments of reservoirs and streams, establishing the level of mutagenic and mitotoxic activity of the aqueous extract of bottom sediments and determining the degree of genotoxic contamination by the total index of genotoxic activity (SIGA). In this case, the total index of genotoxic activity is calculated as the sum of the values of the total index of mutagenic activity (SIMA) manifesting under the action of an aqueous extract of bottom sediments on Allium sera, Chlorella vulgaris and Drosophila melanogaster, and the severity of mitotoxic activity (MTA) caused by an increase in the duration of the mitotic metaphase. With SIGA equal to 7 or more there is a potential risk of developing cancer for the population.
EFFECT: comprehensive assessment makes it possible to identify the presence of genotoxicants accumulated in bottom sediments and to reveal the relationship between the genotoxic properties of the aqueous extract of bottom sediments and the level of cancer incidence in the population.
