FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in chemical industry. Synthesis gas for ammonia synthesis is obtained by conversion of hydrocarbons with steam in a primary conversion apparatus (1) which is equipped with a plurality of externally heated catalyst tubes and then with air in a secondary conversion apparatus (2). Reaction of hydrocarbons with steam in the primary conversion apparatus (1) takes place at operating pressure of not more than 35 bar in the catalyst tubes. Air is fed into the secondary conversion apparatus in excess with respect to the amount of nitrogen required for synthesis of ammonia, and excess nitrogen is removed downstream from the secondary conversion apparatus, preferably by cryogenic separation or a TSA or PSA type molecular sieve.
EFFECT: invention enables to achieve high capacity for producing synthesis gas, reduce capital costs and power consumption.
