FIELD: measurement equipment.

SUBSTANCE: method involves action of sounding radiation on the surface, for which metal has negative actual part of dielectric permeability, conversion of radiation to a set of beams of surface electromagnetic waves (SEW) guided with the surface, lighting of the controlled section of surface with those beams, recording of beams with a set of beam receivers and processing of measurement results. Conversion of radiation to SEW is completed on a straight line perpendicular to the incidence plane. Beams are formed so that they are parallel and adjacent to each other. Lighting of the section with beams is performed in turn in two different directions, and recording of beams is performed above the section in row of planes perpendicular to SEW tracks by measuring the distribution of SEW field intensity in the environment, thus fixing at the recording moments the distance covered with SEW and coordinates of receivers in the recording plane.

EFFECT: improving localisation accuracy of non-homogeneities of metal surface.
