FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method of setting up an electromagnetic converter involves amplitude-phase balancing by successive rotation of a variable resistor of a bridge circuit (7) and moving a short-circuited current-conducting non-ferromagnetic ring (4) along an exciting coil (2) until reaching the extremum of millivoltmeter readings outside the area of effect of any current-conducting material. The converter is then mounted on a current-conducting substrate (5) without a deposited layer of a non-conducting coating whose thickness will be subsequently measured. The maximum millivoltmeter reading of the electronic signal processing circuit (6) is recorded. The converter is then removed from the substrate (5). By rotating the variable resistor, the bridge circuit (7) of the converter is disbalanced by a value 0.75-2.5% of the maximum millivoltmeter reading of the electronic signal processing circuit (6). The operating point for taking readings of the thickness of the non-conducting coating is then obtained.

EFFECT: high accuracy of the converter by excluding dead zones near the extremum during setup.
