FIELD: radio engineering, communication.
SUBSTANCE: method involves probing an object with a known ultra-wideband signal and receiving the radiation reflected by the object using a plurality of receivers, wherein before measurement, the controlled region in space where the object is located is divided into volume resolution elements which are then numbered and coordinates of each resolution element are determined; a priori overall antenna gain values of the emitter and the receivers and delay periods when the radiation travels from the source to each resolution element and therefrom to each receiver are determined; a time-dependent weight matrix is formed from a priori data; at a certain moment in time signal values at the outputs of the receivers are measured and then merged into a measurement vector; a scattering vector estimate is found from a vector-matrix equation of measurements which reflects the dependency of the measurement vector on the scattering vector and includes the weight matrix; components of said estimate essentially different from zero are selected; reflection characteristics of volume elements of the extended object are determined in form of radar cross-section thereof as values of the selected components and coordinates of said volume elements are determined as coordinates of resolution elements with numbers equal to numbers of the corresponding selected scattering vector estimate components.
EFFECT: high reliability of determined data and information value thereof and easier measurement.
