SUBSTANCE: apparatus and methods for controlling sleep mode in a wireless device are disclosed. In particular, the operating cycle of the sleep mode for preamble transmission through an access point (AP), for example, is variably or adaptively set up in response to certain conditions of the neighbourhood. The certain conditions include determining if other wireless devices are present in the vicinity of the detecting wireless device and the conditions of the present devices, as well as if said devices are in sleep mode or active mode.
EFFECT: reduced power consumption.
