FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and an apparatus for decontaminating water in order to reduce the number of aquatic organisms present in a certain volume of water, and can be used to decontaminate water carried by ships, which is contained in the ballast tank of the ship. According to the invention, water contaminated with aquatic organisms is collected and pumped through a long system of pipes, wherein the volume flow rate of water is the same at all points of the system, and water at each point of the system has hydrostatic head and velocity head, after which the water is fed into a tank. Ozone is added to the water in amount of 0.001-0.1 g/l; the water is electrolysed in a reactor, where the water is seawater, and sodium hypochlorite is added to the water in amount of 0.4-1.0 mg/l and the water is pumped through the reactor, having such a system of pipes with a different diameter, in which the hydrostatic head of the water falls to a level below atmospheric pressure at a first point of the system, and water cavitation takes place owing to high velocity head of the water at that point.

EFFECT: invention reduces power consumption and enables to use a smaller amount of hazardous chemicals to achieve the required degree of purification of water.
