FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of obtaining 1,2-dimethyl-5-nitroimidazole, which consists in a reaction of synthesis of 1-methyl-4(5)-nitroimidazole with dimethylsulphate in the presence of formic acid with heating and under pressure, in further removal of formic acid from the reaction mixture and separation of the target product, characterised by the fact that reagents are taken in a ratio 2-methyl-4(5)-nitroimidazole/dimethylsulphate/formic acid of 1.0:1.03:4.97, with an application of 2-methyl-4(5)-nitroimidazole, which is preliminarily purified from admixtures.
EFFECT: high output and quality of the target product.
