FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an improved method of producing meropenem trihydrate, the chemical name of [(1R,5S,6S)-2-[((2'S,4'S)-2'-dimethylaminocarbozyl)pyrrolidin-4'-ylthio]-6-[(R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-1-methylcarbapen-2-em-3-carboxylic acid trihydrate], of formula (1):

involving reacting meropenem-PNB of formula (2):
meropenem-PNB with zinc powder in a solvent which is a mixture of an organic solvent and an aqueous phosphate solution to remove the p-nitrobenzyl group, subsequently removing phosphate from the obtained mixture and crystallising the obtained meropenem trihydrate from the solvent mixture.
EFFECT: method enables to obtain an end product with output of 78%, excludes explosive hydrogen and an expensive Pd/C catalyst.
