FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method for selective and direct formation of ethanol from acetic acid, wherein a stream of material containing acetic acid and hydrogen gas at temperature of 200-300°C is brought into contact with a hydrogenation catalyst containing cobalt and a second metal on a catalyst support, where the cobalt is present in an amount of 0.1-20 wt % and where the second metal is selected from a group consisting of palladium, platinum and chromium.
EFFECT: method for selective and direct formation of ethanol from acetic acid.
