FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: proposed method comprises precipitation of at least one titanium carbonitride layer from gas on tool base. Precipitation is started at base temperature of 850-950°C to be increase to at least 40°C to continue precipitation for preset time at increased temperature. Titanium carbonitride layer is precipitated from gas containing metane, nitrogen and titanium tetrachloride. Content of precipitation gas makes 1 molar part of methane, 8-11 molar parts of nitrogen and 15-25 molar parts of hydrogen. Some 1-8 molar part of titanium tetrachloride is included in gas composition. Cutting tool or cutting insert has a coat with at least one titanium carbonitride layer of nano-composite structure composed of crystals with nonuniform distribution of chemical elements. Note here that said crystals feature different carbon and nitrogen content at center and boundary zone.
EFFECT: cutting tool that features high wear resistance.
