FIELD: electricity.
SUBSTANCE: method involves periodic plotting, near a cathode station, of a control curve f1 of the potential of the underground structure versus the logarithm of the current of the cathode station; determining the upper value of potential Uup, corresponding to the point of change of the slope of the control curve f1; determining and maintaining, between plotting of control curves, the optimum value of the potential of the underground structure, wherein control curves f2 and f3 of potential are further plotted in at least two more points lying on the boundary of the protective zone on both sides along the structure; for curves f2 and f3, current values In2 and In3, which correspond to the minimum standardised potential Umin, are determined; the highest of the current values In2 and In3 is selected; for the control curve f1, the value of potential corresponding to the highest current value is determined, which is taken as the lower allowable value Ulow, and the potential between values Ulow and Uup is selected as the optimum potential.
EFFECT: method increases reliability of protecting a structure on its entire length while reducing power consumption.
