FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: according to the method, a radiometer is used to obtain an image of an underlying surface in form of a brightness function I(x,y), having control areas with known radiation level. The gradient loop of thermal anomalies relative background level brightness is determined by spatial differentiation of the image brightness function I(x,y). The selected loop is identified with the contamination zone and the area of the contamination zone is calculated based on the number of pixels in the loop and spatial resolution of one pixel of the radiometer. A histogram of pixel brightness inside the selected loops is constructed for quantitative estimation of the radiation contamination level.
EFFECT: objectiveness, reliability and accuracy of determining contamination zones around a nuclear power station.
