FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method of making an ophthalmic lens involves placing a variable optical insert capable of changing optical characteristics of the ophthalmic lens in the immediate vicinity of the first part of a casting mould; the variable optical insert having a liquid meniscus lens; depositing a monomer reaction mixture into the first part of the casting mould and bringing the variable optical insert into contact with the monomer reaction mixture; positioning the first part of the casting mould in the immediate vicinity of the second part of the casting mould, thereby forming a lens cavity with the variable optical insert and at least a part of the monomer reaction mixture in the lens cavity; and exposing the monomer reaction mixture to actinic radiation.
EFFECT: broader functionality of ophthalmic lenses and providing controlled variation of optical characteristics of the ophthalmic lens.
