FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method involves generating light corresponding to gamma-rays detected in a geological formation using a scintillator having natural radioactivity, generating an electrical signal corresponding to the light, and stabilising the gain of the electrical signal based on the natural radioactivity of the scintillator. The scintillator may contain, for example, naturally radioactive elements such as lutetium or lanthanum.
EFFECT: enabling gain stabilisation for a gamma-ray scintillation detector without an additional radioactive source.
