FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of a refractory material based on aluminium oxycarbide. The method involves preparing a mixture basically consisting of a carbon-containing starting material, having mean particle diameter of 0.5 mm or less, and aluminium oxide-containing starting material, having mean particle diameter of 350 mcm or less, wherein the molar ratio of the carbon-containing starting material to the oxide-containing starting material (C/Al2O3) is in the range of 0.8 to 2.0; homogenously mixing the mixture to ensure inconsistency of the content of component C in the range of ±10%, and melting the obtained mixture in an arc furnace at temperature of 1850°C or higher. The obtained material contains more than 95 wt % of the sum of C and Al2O3, of which Al4O4C makes up 45 wt % or more, another phase makes up less than 10 wt % and Al2O3 makes up the balance.
EFFECT: high output of Al4O4C with simultaneous reduction of content of Al4C3 and achieving high efficiency of the method.
