FIELD: measurement equipment.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of meteorology and glaciology and may be used to detect thickness of snow cover on slopes to predict avalanche hazard and to determine accumulation of snow in mountains. According to the proposed method, with the help of a laser range finder placed in a valley, they determine the distance to the reference point at the slope (L1), azimuth (A1) and a probing angle (β). Then, having displaced a probing beam to a certain distance AB along the horizontal line to the left or right, they determine the distance (L2) to an arbitrary auxiliary point on the slope and an azimuth of probing of this point (A2). After that from the projection onto the horizontal plane from values L1, L2 and AB, forming a triangle with appropriate sides b, a and c, they determine the angle α between projections of sections L1 and L2 to the horizontal plane, and by this angle and projections of the sides L1 and L2 they find the actual value of the projection AB and the angles φ and γ, formed accordingly at the junction of the projections of the sections L1 and L2 with the projection of the section AB. Then they determine the aspect via the azimuth of probing of the reference point at the slope, or via the azimuth of probing of the arbitrary auxiliary point at the slope or via the azimuth of probing of the arbitrary auxiliary point of the slope.
