FIELD: physics, acoustics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to fibre-optic distributed acoustic measurement for detecting P- and S-waves in a solid medium. Distributed acoustic measurement can be achieved using unmodified fibre optics by triggering optical pulses in a fibre and detecting radiation which undergoes Rayleigh backscatter therefrom. Analysis of responses in analysis bins enables to detect acoustic perturbations in multiple discrete longitudinal sections of the fibre.
EFFECT: enabling distributed fibre-optic acoustic measurement of S- and P-waves.
