FIELD: physics; control.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used to monitor an underground pipeline. The method involves interrogating an optical fibre placed along the pipeline route to provide a distributed acoustic measurement, feeding an acoustic pulse into the channel, measuring, using the distributed acoustic measurement, a response to the acoustic pulse on each of a plurality of discrete longitudinal measuring portions and outputting from the plurality of measurements a channel status profile, wherein said channel is a pipeline and the acoustic pulse is generated by a projectile passing through the pipeline.
EFFECT: high reliability of the method with simultaneous simplification thereof when monitoring an underground pipeline.
