FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to materials, suitable as burnable absorbers in nuclear reactors, to elements, which contain the said materials, as well as to methods of their application. Burnable absorbing materials in accordance with the invention can include natural iridium and enriched iridium-193. Elements in accordance with the invention can be produced, formed and placed to provide required effects of the burnable absorbers in a core of a nuclear reactor in composition of such elements as the upper and lower cover plates, a water tube, a separator and a reactor fuel channel. The burnable absorber is in fact converted only into platinum after exposure in a neuron flow in the working reactor.
EFFECT: improvement of neutron characteristics and/or screening of the neutron flow in traditionally unused places of the core.
