SUBSTANCE: invention relates to travelling-wave (deflagration) nuclear reactors. The nuclear reactor core comprises a feed area 11 into which fresh fuel is loaded and a burning area 12 where fuel burns. Uranium-derived plutonium decays to generate output energy and the burning area 12 moves from the beginning to the end of the burning cycle. If the core, which is substantially circular when viewed from above, is divided into a central part and a peripheral part, the feed area 11 is formed such that the mass of uranium per unit volume in the central part is less than that in the peripheral part.
EFFECT: radial balancing of power, fuel irradiation and fuel burning.
