SUBSTANCE: invention relates to cellular communication. Described is a cellular communication network which supports mobile terminals operating in accordance with an outdated standard and mobile terminals operating in accordance with a next-generation standard which supports reference signals of an outdated standard and reference signals of a next-generation standard. The operating method of a transmitter based on a MIMO scheme in accordance with both standards includes: determining a resource block matrix in the data channel of a cellular communication network, each resource block corresponding to the subcarrier zone of a transmission time slot in a defined frequency subband; assigning a first set of reference signals for mobile terminals operating in accordance with an outdated standard to resource blocks in defined positions of the matrix to be transmitted by the MIMO transmitter, wherein said defined positions are defined by the outdated standard; and assigning a second set of reference signals for mobile terminals operating in accordance a next-generation standard to other resource blocks of the matrix to be transmitted by the MIMO transmitter.
