FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: before hardening in an inorganic or polymer matrix material, oil-containing liquid radioactive wastes undergo biodegradation through enzymatic processes by selected consortiums of microorganisms, wherein the microorganisms oxidise the organic phase of the oil to gaseous non-radioactive products, thereby reducing the volume of oil-containing liquid radioactive wastes two- to ten-fold. Radionuclides are collected and biogenic surfactants/emulsifiers are separated.
EFFECT: reducing the volume of oil-containing radioactive wastes before incorporation thereof into an inorganic or polymer matrix, reducing the volume of the end product to be stored for a long period of time, preventing biodegradation of oil-containing liquid radioactive wastes in a compound during prolonged storage.
