SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to wireless data transmission systems which employ wireless base stations and other devices, such as a radio relay node, and facilitates switching between a spectrum combination mode and a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) mode in accordance with the observed amount of traffic for given channel throughput. Traffic usage is detected and based on channel usage with respect to throughput. Use of spectrum combination instead of MIMO is chosen under certain conditions. On the other hand, for higher channel usage, system components are switched to MIMO mode to reduce channel usage requirements while ensuring good throughput for data transmission stations.
