FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry and specifically to a method of producing metronidazole by alkylating 2-methyl-4(5)-nitroimidazole with ethylene chlorohydrin while heating in the presence of hydrochloric acid, removing excess alkylating agent at low pressure and filtering off unreacted 2-methyl-4(5)-nitroimidazole, after which the obtained solution is neutralised, cooled and filtered and the separated product is purified.
EFFECT: novel method of producing metronidazole, characterised by high output of the end product.
