FIELD: process engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to laser hardening of flat billets and can be used for hard-facing of materials. This process comprises application of laser beam to biller surface to get a quenched subsurface layer. Simultaneously, coolant flow is fed to produce unquenched viscous subsurface layer, its depth being controlled by fed coolant.
EFFECT: preset depth of viscous subsurface layer, hence, enhanced properties.
