FIELD: measurement equipment.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to dendrometry and may be used in indication of natural environment, in particular, by butt part of trees growing in various environmental conditions of growth. The invention may also be used in development of actions for improvement of quality of forest and non-forest stands with account of laws in the trunk shape of accounted trees by diameter depending on azimuth of its measurement. The method includes measurement of diameter by two mutually perpendicular directions of north-south and east-west. Measurements of the diameter and azimuth of direction of this diameter are made via set intervals of azimuth, starting from the northern geodetic direction, jointly by using a single device along separate transverse sections of the trunk at different heights from the soil surface. Additionally they determine azimuths of directions of minimum and maximum values of the diameter at this height of the trunk. The device comprises a body of a measurement fork, on which a compass is installed at the side of the millimetre scale of a telescopic rack. The compass is installed with orientation by marks to the north and south along the telescopic rack.

EFFECT: method and device will provide for simplification of a measurement process and increased accuracy of measured values of trunk diameter at different heights.
