SUBSTANCE: method involves a control system, an external combustion chamber, two pistons with compressor cavities and an exhaust gas relief valve in each cylinder, according to the invention, the control system monitors the current pressure values of the combustion products supplied to the working cavity of the power unit piston from the external combustion chamber and pressure of air compressed in the compressor cavity of the same piston, basing on the above values the system determines the moment when to open the valve to bypass the exhaust gases from the compressor cavity of one piston to the compressor cavity of the other piston, the control system opens the valve to bypass the exhaust gases from the compressor cavity of one piston to the compressor cavity of the other piston, thus exhaust gases coming from the compressor cavity of one piston to the compressor cavity of the other piston via the above valve are mixed in the compressor cavity with the compressed air and the mixture of air and exhaust gases is supplied to the external combustion chamber.
EFFECT: invention allows for the optimisation of combustion product expansion process in pistons of free piston power unit with opposite piston movement connected to compressor pistons with the help of gas distribution valves.
