FIELD: physics, atomic power.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to nuclear materials and can be used in converting uranium tetrafluoride, including depleted uranium tetrafluoride, into triuranium octoxide to obtain a valuable polycrystalline silicon precursor - silicon tetrafluoride. The method of producing silicon tetrafluoride and triuranium octoxide from uranium tetrafluoride includes mixing uranium tetrafluoride with silicon dioxide, which is first subjected to mechanical activation in the presence of 0.5-3 wt % sodium fluoride, homogenising the mixture in a stoichiometric ratio, granulating the homogenised mixture, drying at 250-300°C and heat-treating the granules in a medium of dry air for 1-2 hours at temperature not higher than 600°C.
EFFECT: invention provides high output of high-purity silicon tetrafluoride, which is not contaminated with volatile uranium compounds, as well as low process temperature, which enables to use cheaper structural materials.
