FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: indenting is performed by balance scribing and scribing results are measured by material strain and destruction parameters. Measured results are referenced to analyzed mechanical properties of materials. Performances features of said materials are predicted by measures results of scribing. Cross-section area S of scribing trace is defined as the sum of component areas, namely S1+S2+S3+S4, where S1 is the main material specimen area displaced by indenter, S2 and S3 are cross-sections of rolls formed in outline of scribing trace, S4 is the area of specimen material spalling outside specified areas S2 and S3 of rolls. Said area S is used to decide on mechanical and operating features of materials to be ranged in series by variation of properties.

EFFECT: simplified process, enhanced performances.
