The electric vacuum cleaner (11) comprises side brushes (18) each of which comprises bristles (32b) of the brush, that come into contact with the surface (F) of the floor so that the side brushes are capable of rotating sidewise in front of the suction channel on the lower part of the main housing (12). The electric vacuum cleaner (11) comprises a unit (21) of obstacle detection, that detects that the bristles (32b) of the side brush (18) are under the rug (R). The electric vacuum cleaner (11) comprises a control unit which controls the drive wheels (15) to change the mode of independent movement and bypass of the rug (R), when the unit (21) of obstacle detection detects that the bristles (32b) of the side brush (18) are under the rug (R).
