FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to acceleration engineering and can be used to accelerate ion beams in an energy range, where known accelerating structures with drift pipes on π oscillation type are used. The disclosed accelerator can be used as an intermediate section of a linear accelerator of high-energy ions. The accelerating-focusing system of the linear accelerator is a combination of coaxially symmetrical drift pipes and quadrupole lenses. In order to simplify the design of the linear accelerator, the resonance structure which generates high-frequency potential at the pipes and the lenses has a quadrupole structure in the axial region. The drift pipes are connected to a pair of electrodes of the resonance structure lying in the same plane. In the linear accelerator, the full potential difference generated by the resonance structure is applied to both the drift pipes and the electrodes of the quadrupole lenses.
EFFECT: increasing energy gaining by ions in each acceleration period, easy formation of areas with a quadrupole field, increasing the achieved potential difference by optimising the shape of the lens electrodes.
