SUBSTANCE: invention relates to determining a reference data set for classification of valuable documents. The method includes the following steps: forming a reference image of a class through a plurality of reference images of already classified valuable documents of the same class and forming a reference data set of the class with at least one reference class parameter based on the reference image of the class. Values of the corresponding pixel of the reference image of the class are a function of pixel values of the corresponding pixels of a plurality of reference images of already classified valuable documents of the same class. In order to classify documents, the method includes the following steps: determining at least one quantitative property of the valuable document to be classified and classifying the valuable document to be classified based on comparison of the quantitative property of the valuable document to be classified with the reference parameter of the class of the reference data set of the class. The subject of the invention is also a corresponding device (10).
EFFECT: high accuracy of image data used to classify valuable documents, primarily banknotes.
