A vehicle computer-implemented method of updating map information stored in a vehicle database, said map information relating to a route to a destination indicated by a user, the method comprising: determining map data items through which the route passes; determining the need to update the first one of said items; evaluating the right to access the update; depending on the evaluation, updating said map data item; and as the vehicle moves, successively repeating steps of determining the need to update, evaluating the right to access and updating for all items included in the route, located at a predetermined distance from the current position of the vehicle on the route, wherein if the update relates to safety, the map data item is updated regardless of the access right.
