SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means of calculating distance from a position in main memory to the boundary of a main memory block. A machine instruction is received, which includes: at least one operation code field for providing an operation code which identifies a Load Count to Block Boundary operation intended for calculating distance from a position in the main memory to the boundary of a main memory block; a register field used to designate a register, wherein the register includes a first operand and at least one field for indicating the position of a second operand, wherein the second operand includes at least part of said main memory block. The machine instruction is executed to perform said operation. The distance from the position of the second operand to the boundary of the main memory block is determined, which includes a processor counting the number of bytes from the position of the second operand to the boundary of the main memory block. A value is set in the first operand, which represents said distance and is a result of performing the Load Count to Block Boundary operation.
