SUBSTANCE: method of authenticating a user to a transaction at a terminal, wherein a user identifier is transmitted from the terminal to a transaction partner via a first communication channel, and a second communication channel is used for checking an authentication function which is implemented in a mobile device of the user, and the authentication function is normally inactive and is activated by the user only preliminarily for the transaction, and, as a criterion for deciding whether the authentication to the transaction is to be granted or denied, the authentication device checks whether a predetermined time relation exists between the transmission of the user identifier and the active state of the authentication function. The authentication device is linked with the second communication channel to check the active state of the authentication function and receives a response from the second communication channel. Said response includes the information that the authentication function is active, and the authentication function is automatically deactivated.
