SUBSTANCE: invention relates to non-transitory computer-readable media, server computers and methods of authenticating a transaction participant. The method comprises receiving transaction information containing identification data elements associated with a transaction participant, based on which a hash value is generated as input into a hash algorithm, wherein the identification data elements are not recoverable from the hash value, sending an authorisation request to an authentication control server which includes a hash value, receiving an authorisation response from the authentication control server containing an indicator generated by said server for authentication of the participant, which indicates whether participant data elements stored by the authentication control server match identification data elements of the received transaction information by comparing the hash value in the authorisation request with the hash value computed by the authentication control server, based on the participant data elements, and authorising the transaction if the indicator indicates that participant data elements match identification data elements of the received transaction information.
