FIELD: radio engineering, communication.

SUBSTANCE: method comprises receiving information relating to a first radio network from a first radio communication unit by obtaining an identifier of a cellular telephone network mast which is in communication with the first radio communication unit, and determining whether to connect a second radio communication unit to a second radio network, based on the received information relating to the first radio network, by comparing the obtained identifier with a list of identifiers stored in memory to determine if there is match. Power to the second radio communication unit is turned on or off based on whether the obtained identifier matches a value stored in memory, and an attempt is made to establish a connection with the second radio communication unit. An identifier of a cellular telephone network mast in communication with the first radio communication unit is then obtained if a connection cannot be established with the second radio communication unit and the obtained identifier is recorded in memory.

EFFECT: reducing power consumption of wireless communication devices in order to extend battery life.
