SUBSTANCE: invention relates to image interpolation and more specifically to interpolation between pixel values of integer pixel units. An image interpolation method for motion compensation differently includes selecting filter coefficients according to an interpolation location and generating a pixel value of a fractional pixel unit by applying an interpolation filter to pixel values of integer pixel units using the selected filter coefficients. The interpolation location includes one of 1/4 pixel location, a 2/4 pixel location and a 3/4 pixel location. When the interpolation location is a 2/4 pixel location, the interpolation filter comprises eight filter coefficients. When the interpolation location is a 1/4 or 3/4 pixel location, the pixel value is generated by applying the interpolation filter to the pixel values of the integer pixel units without using the generated pixel value of the 2/4 pixel location.
EFFECT: achieving the high accuracy of generating pixel values of fractional pixel units by interpolating pixel values of integer pixel units.
