FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: airfoil includes a braided fabric immersed in a lightweight aluminium-lithium alloy. Airfoil is made by creating a plurality of fibre tows by twisting filaments or fibres. Tows was then braided into a fabric. Fabric may be impregnated with an optional volatile optional polymer which temporarily occupies voids in fabric in order to facilitate the movement of a preformed braided fabric, but which is subsequently removed. Airfoil can then be made as a MMC using one of two different methods. In first method, an aluminium-lithium alloy is subjected to casting under increasing pressure into a die, which includes a workpiece made of fabric impregnated with a volatile polymer. In second method a workpiece is created using a tool and a core by impregnating fabric with an aluminium-lithium alloy. Aluminium-lithium alloy is then subjected to casting under increasing pressure into a die, which includes a workpiece impregnated with said alloy.

EFFECT: lightweight compressor airfoil made of composite with a metal matrix.
