SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a system and method of determining the origin and storage temperature and, consequently, the depth of underground deposits of hydrocarbons. Disclosed is a method for determining presence and location of an underground hydrocarbon deposit on the basis of a sample of natural origin. There is determined the expected concentration of hydrocarbon component iso-drafter. Expected temperature dependence of iso-drafters present in the sample is simulated with the help of high-level non-empiric calculations. There is measured signature of agglomerated isotopes for iso-drafters present in the sample. Signature of agglomerated isotopes is compared with the expected concentration of iso-drafters. By means of comparison, there is determined whether hydrocarbons present in the sample, come directly from source rocks or escaped from the underground deposit. There is determined a current equilibrium temperature of storage of the hydrocarbon component in the underground deposit prior to its escape onto the surface. There is determined a location of the underground deposit. This information can be integrated with models of a sedimentation situation in the basin before drilling for calibration of the basin model.
EFFECT: higher degree of identification of a location of a hydrocarbon deposit.
