FIELD: engines and pumps.
SUBSTANCE: diesel engine has an inlet side and an outlet side with at least one inlet valve and one outlet valve (2) per cylinder. Diesel engine comprises a reformer catalyst unit comprising a catalyst (7) located downstream of outlet valve (2). Catalyst (7) is located such that a proportion of hot exhaust passes through catalyst, while remaining hot exhaust passes to a turbocharger and/or to exhaust gas after-treatment. Catalyst unit comprises diesel fuel supply means (11), such that diesel fuel may be injected to provide heat to reformer catalyst to raise it to an effective reforming temperature. Catalyst (7) is ring-shaped and is located inside annular housing (8), which enables hot exhaust gas to flow on inner and outer surface of housing (8).
EFFECT: higher catalyst temperature.
