FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to development of depleted uranium hexafluoride conversion technology to produce uranium tetrafluoride and, further, uranium metal for military purposes or uranium oxide for long-term storage or use in fast reactors, as well as anhydrous HF. Method of converting uranium hexafluoride includes heating uranium hexafluoride to temperature of 100 °C, mixing with dry nitrogen to concentration of 25-30 vol% and contacting resultant gaseous mixture with atomic hydrogen, source of which is gaseous methanol at temperature 350-650 °C, additionally, uranium tetrafluoride is converted to uranium dioxide and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.
EFFECT: invention provides efficient production of chemically active uranium tetrafluoride, which is not contaminated with structural materials, and uranium oxides, not contaminated with fluorine.
