FIELD: instrument making.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a device for hair treatment, which has light-based detector (10) for detecting hair (11) near surface (12) of the skin. Detector (10) comprises light source (13) to emit optical radiation with at least a first wavelength and with polarization of incident wave in the direction of the skin surface. Light sensor (14a, 14b) is intended for detecting light reflected from the skin surface. Light sensor (14a, 14b) is capable of separately detecting reflected light with incident polarization and with a different polarization and provide a PP value, which represents the detected light with incident polarization, and a CP value, which represents detected light with different polarization. Processor (15) is operative to scale the CP value and the PP value to respective dynamic ranges, to determine a Minimum Intensity Projection (MIP) value by selecting the lowest value of the scaled CP value and the scaled PP value and to discriminate between the skin surface (12) and the hair (11) based on the minimum intensity projection.
EFFECT: invention increases sensitivity and specificity of detection.
