SUBSTANCE: device contains a light-based detector for detecting hair near the skin surface. The detector includes a light source for generating a light beam, optical elements for focusing the light beam on the hair near the skin surface, and the first polarization-sensitive optical sensor for detecting light which interacts with the hair or skin surface and has a predetermined linear polarization configured to detect light reflected by the hair as a birefringent object, the second polarization-sensitive sensor for detecting light which interacts with the hair or skin surface and has a polarization orthogonal to the predetermined linear polarization. The light source and/or the optical elements are arranged to cause the light beam, when reaching the hair or skin surface, to have a polarization direction which is unchanged in time and variable in space in the cross sections of the light beam.
