FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to mixture for producing D,L-methionine or 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)-butyric acid, containing nitrile of 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutyric acid in amount of 86 to 97 wt%, and water in amount of 2 to 14 wt%, HCN in amount of 0.05 to 0.5 wt% and having pH varying from 1 to 4, measured by means of pH-electrode at 23 °C. Invention also relates to a method of preparing a mixture containing nitrile of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butyric acid, where a) 3-methylmercaptopropionic aldehyde reacts with hydrogen cyanide in presence of a base catalyst to produce nitrile and during this process and/or then b) water content, optionally by addition thereof, is set in range from 2 to 14 wt%, and content of HCN, optionally by addition thereof, is set within range from 0.05 to 0.5 wt% HCN, then c) value of pH, optionally by adding acid, is set in range from 1 to 4.
EFFECT: obtained mixture is stored in a stable state.
