FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention is intended to produce a methionine salt with an alkali metal. The reaction system for producing a methionine salt includes reactivefractionation column with the height of overflow gate of 100 - 1000 mm, the distance between the plates of 500 - 1000 mm, with a ratio of column diameter to plate length of 1.1 - 1.3, with the ratio of cross-sectional area to the gas flow area of 1.5 - 2 and the number of plates of 15 - 25, preferably 18 - 20. A continuous process for producing a methionine salt is that 3-methylmercaptopropionic aldehyde and hydrogen cyanide are subjected to chemical conversion, or the component (derived from them) containing 5- (2-methylmercaptoethyl) hydantoin of the solution and the obtained 5- (2-methylmercaptoethyl) hydantoin is converted by basic hydrolysis into methionine salt in the reactive fractionation column. The top plate of the column is fed only with the solution containing 5- (2-methylmercaptoethyl) hydantoin, and the underlying plate, preferably the 2nd from the top, is fed with the recycle basic solution; the recycle basic solution containing alkali metal carbonate is used.

EFFECT: invention provides for minimization of formation of by-products.
