FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemical industry. 3-methyl mercaptopropion aldehyde and hydrogen cyanide are subjected to chemical conversion to produce a 5-(2-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin-containing solution, which is subjected to main hydrolysis to obtain a methionine salt in a reaction-fractionation column. On upper plate of reaction-fractionation column 5-(2-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin-containing solution is fed, and on underlying plate main recycle solution is fed. Height of overflow partitions of reaction-rectification column ranges from 100 to 1,000 mm. Distance between plates varies from 500 to 1,000 mm. Ratio of diameter of column to length of overflow partition ranges from 1.1 to 1.3. Ratio to cross-sectional area to glass flow area ranges from 1.5 to 2 and number of plates ranges from 15 to 25, preferably from 18 to 20.
EFFECT: invention enables to remove unsaturated secondary components, primarily, allyl alcohol, from process of producing methionine.
